Turnarounds · TAR-Check How ready is your turnaround really?

According to industry studies, around 90% of all shutdowns miss at least one of their targets – and it is almost always decided long before the first spade goes in.

The full TAR-Check

16 analysis elements. One maturity level.

The TAR-Check assesses your TAR processes across 16 analysis elements – and shows the maturity level of your organisation in a neutral comparison with your industry and with good/best practice. The benchmarking is based on objective criteria, developed from the data, facts and experience of hundreds of projects.

Self-test

Six questions. Two minutes. An honest result.

A short version of the self-assessment – it does not replace an analysis, but in two minutes it shows where your preparation stands.

Question 1 of 6

How many months before the shutdown is your scope freeze date?

The freeze date decides whether planning leads – or lags behind.

The quick check is a short version of the self-assessment and does not replace an analysis. Your answers stay in your browser – they are neither stored nor transmitted.

How the TAR-Check works

Only 3 days on site – results in two weeks

  1. 01

    Self-assessment & review

First your turnaround team assesses itself, then comes the review with ep-cm specialists – only three days on site with you, with or without an upcoming turnaround.

  2. 02

    Benchmarking

The results for each analysis element are benchmarked against your industry and compared with good/best practice – based on data from hundreds of projects.

  3. 03

    Recommendations

Targeted recommendations for all 16 analysis elements, matched to your stage of development – presented to your management within two weeks. We help with implementation straight away, as advisers and hands-on.

If your concern is specifically the quality of your schedule, the SMI – Schedule Mechanics & Integrity Review complements the TAR-Check. The SMI checks your schedule against 35 criteria, and the results are available in 2–4 days.

Context

The TAR-Check provides the foundation

Working with ep-cm starts with a conversation. Then we come on site – with specialists from exactly the area concerned. The TAR-Check is the tool we use to measure rather than estimate. It is not a must: we also start work without it. But it lays the best foundation for everything that follows – for an improvement programme as well as for leading your next shutdown through Turnaround Management.

Questions answered

What does the TAR-Check cost?

The TAR-Check is a clearly defined package with a defined result. Billing is by the hour, by day rates or at a fixed price – we work out together which model fits. The amount depends on the size of your organisation and the timing – after the free initial call you receive a binding quotation.

How long does the TAR-Check take?

After your team’s self-assessment, we are on site with you for just three days – you receive the full results with benchmarking and recommendations for action within two weeks.

When is the right time for a TAR-Check?

Any time is a good time: a turnaround organisation can always improve, even between two shutdowns. If a specific turnaround is coming up, we recommend the TAR-Check before the key readiness gates – then the results feed directly into the decision at the gate.

What distinguishes the TAR-Check from other analysis methods?

The questions come from practice, not theory – asked by specialists who plan and carry out turnarounds themselves. Each group in the team gets targeted questions on its own topics, rather than only management being asked. This way, the team checks management’s statements and vice versa: you get a differentiated picture for each analysis element, and all levels of the hierarchy are brought up to the same level of knowledge.

Do we need finished planning documents for this?

No. The check assesses the status as it is – gaps are a result too. What is needed is your turnaround team's self-assessment and time for the joint review; it works with or without an upcoming turnaround.

Terms such as TAR organisation, readiness gate and self-assessment are explained in our glossary – along with 56 other terms from the shutdown and project business.
